A little guidance for a good night
Make yourself
at home.
Everything you need to set up Foldstand, tune your mornings and get back to winding down.
Your first night, in five steps.
- Allow alarms. Complete onboarding and grant alarm permission. Calendar, Photos and location access are optional and depend on the features you use.
- Choose a face. Open Faces and pick a template. Check the clock and next alarm are easy to read at your bedside.
- Set an alarm. Choose a time, repeat days and a sound or scene. Review snooze, dismissal and fade-in settings.
- Set your glow. Pick a color and brightness. Premium adds fade schedules and sunrise.
- Start Nightstand. Connect a charger, check volume and Bluetooth, then leave Foldstand open. Try a short test alarm first.
Two parts to your wake-up.
In-app scene: your chosen media plays while Foldstand is open in Nightstand mode. Basic supports audio, image, or image + audio. Premium adds video, streaming and per-day scenes.
System alarm: AlarmKit provides a built-in-sound alarm when the app isn’t running, plus the configured backup behavior for Nightstand mode. Its appearance and audio are controlled by iOS.
Preview a scene, check your actual volume and test an alarm before your first overnight use. A stream needs a working connection; local files are easier to test ahead of time.
Build your evening atmosphere.
Use Glow to select a color and brightness. On iPhone Duo, open the phone into an L-shaped pose for the clock-above, glow-below layout. Tent mode prioritizes the outer clock display.
Night dimming and red shift reduce the brightness and change the look of the front display. Premium glow schedules let light fade out over time or brighten gradually before your alarm. Light timing can be configured separately from audio.
Find your answer.
Does Foldstand need to stay open overnight?
For the clock, glow and your chosen media to play, yes. Tap Start Nightstand and leave Foldstand in the foreground on a charger. If you leave the app, the system alarm uses a built-in sound instead of your custom image, audio or video.
What happens if the app closes or my phone locks?
Your alarm still rings on time as a system alarm with a built-in sound. Alarms with a song, photo or video show a Wake Scene button that opens Foldstand and plays it. This needs the Alarms permission: check Settings → Apps → Foldstand → Alarms. iOS doesn’t ring alarms for apps that are locked or hidden with Require Face ID, so leave Foldstand unlocked. Keep the device powered and test your setup before relying on it. Custom media and continuous glow require Nightstand mode to remain open.
Why is there a second alarm?
If an alarm playing in Foldstand isn’t stopped, a system backup alarm rings after the Backup Alarm Delay in Settings (2 minutes unless you change it). It also covers you if the app is closed while your alarm is ringing or snoozed. Test both the media alarm and the system backup so you know how each behaves.
How do I change volume or use a fade-in?
Media alarms use media volume. Adjust it on the phone, enable the low-volume warning and choose a fade-in duration in the wake scene. If headphones or a Bluetooth speaker are connected, your alarm plays through them, and Foldstand warns you before you start Nightstand. System alarms use system-controlled audio behavior.
Does Foldstand work on my iPhone?
Foldstand is designed for iPhone Duo and also runs on any iPhone with iOS 27.1 or later. On other iPhones you get the clock faces, widgets, every alarm feature (sounds, photos, videos, YouTube, snooze, challenges and the backup alarm), night dimming and red shift. Tent and Glow modes, the fold-out night light and the inner-display wake glow need iPhone Duo; on other iPhones the glow appears only as a color wash behind faces that use the Glow Wash background, so Sunrise Glow and glow fades tint that background instead of lighting your nightstand.
Can I use Apple Music or Spotify?
Apple Music, yes, with Premium: in a wake scene, choose Sound, then Choose from Apple Music to pick a song, album, playlist or station. It needs an Apple Music subscription and plays at your iPhone’s volume without fade-in; if it can’t start, a built-in sound rings instead. Spotify and other subscription services aren’t supported. You can also use your own audio and video files from Files or Photos, and with Premium, YouTube videos and live streams or compatible direct streaming URLs. Protected media cannot be used.
Can I wake up to a YouTube video or live stream?
Yes, with Premium. In a wake scene, choose Video, then Add YouTube Link and paste a video, live stream or channel link. A channel link plays whatever that channel is streaming live when your alarm rings. Choose Play in Foldstand to keep snooze, fade-in and wake-up challenges (YouTube may show an ad first), or Open in YouTube App for ad-free playback with YouTube Premium. Some owners only allow their videos on YouTube itself; Foldstand checks when you add the link and tells you. If a video can’t play at alarm time, your alarm sound rings instead.
Why is my imported media missing?
Use a file that is downloaded locally and available to the app. Re-select it through Files or Photos if its source moved or access changed. Test the scene before bedtime. Network streams also depend on connectivity and the provider being available.
How do I use Tent mode or Glow mode?
Tent mode uses the outer display on iPhone Duo when positioned like an inverted V. Glow mode uses an L-shaped pose, with the upright half for the clock and the lower half for light. The ongoing night light is a Glow-mode feature; Tent mode does not promise continuous independent inner-screen illumination. Other supported iPhones show the standard nightstand layout.
Does setting brightness to zero turn the display off?
A black or dimmed display is not the same as locking the phone or powering down its screen. Nightstand keeps the app active. Use night dimming, a dark face and lower glow brightness to reduce light, and keep the phone charging.
Can I use a different wake-up on different weekdays?
With Premium, create one repeating alarm and customize its scene by weekday. For example: one scene on Monday, another Tuesday through Thursday, and a third on Friday.
What is included in the one-time purchase?
Basic includes one alarm with repeat days and snooze, local audio/image scenes, basic sounds, clock templates, essential widgets, selectable glow brightness/color, night dimming and red shift. Premium adds the features listed on the marketing page.
How much does Premium cost?
Choose $0.99 per month or $9.99 per year (USD), in addition to the Basic app purchase. Both subscription plans unlock the same Premium features and renew automatically until canceled. Lifetime Premium unlocks the same features with a one-time $79.99 purchase. Local prices and any trial eligibility are shown in the App Store before purchase.
How do I restore or cancel Premium?
For an existing purchase, select Restore Purchases in Foldstand while signed in with the Apple Account used to buy it. Manage or cancel under iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Apple handles billing and refund requests at reportaproblem.apple.com.
How do backups and iCloud sync work?
Use Settings → Backup & Sync to export or import a backup. Premium adds optional iCloud sync using your own Apple account. Keep a backup before replacing a setup or moving devices. Large media files may take time to synchronize.
Why are weather or calendar widgets empty?
Check the relevant permissions in iPhone Settings and ensure the phone has a network connection for weather. Calendar access is optional. If you prefer, choose a face without these widgets.
How do I report a problem?
Include your iPhone model, iOS version, Foldstand version/build, the steps that led to the issue, and whether Nightstand was open. For alarm problems, include permission, volume, Bluetooth and backup-delay settings. Do not send private media or passwords.
